"The Baroque Cycle" at Winterfest

The Kickstarter was a success! Now time to see the show.
”The Baroque Cycle” will be performing at Teatro Latea as a part of Winterfest. So if you’re in New York, come check it out! Nov. 16 @ 4, Nov. 18 @ 6:30, and Nov. 20 @ 1. Get more information here.
Hope to see you there!

It's all happening!

Okay everyone, it’s one of those times; everything is moving forward all at the same time! And when I say everything I mean… well, just about everything I’m working on right now is having some kind of public showing in the next few months. Here’s the rundown…

This Tuesday, July 2nd at 7 PM EST, I’m being interviewed by Seth Christenfeld through the York Theatre’s In the Pipeline program! Along with Michael DiGaetano, we’ll be talking about our Miss Humanity musical comedy. Oh, and you’ll be able to see three world premier songs by some mind-blowingly good performers. So come and tune in! Here’s the link.

Also this Tuesday (well, Monday very late probably), the Planet Money Podcast will be broadcasting “Micro-Face: The Musical.” It’s a fantastic short musical by Kit Goldstein-Grant that had a live performance back in May in Brooklyn. Dear readers, I had the distinct pleasure of music directing this fantastic show. So subscribe to the podcast and listen to the show!

“Peter and the Pied Piper,” fresh off its performance at the Lincoln Center’s Summer in the City program last month, is getting performances late August at the Long Island Childrens’ Museum! This is a TYA show based on the Pied Piper story that addresses hate speech and has a ukulele playing rat. What can be better?! If you’re near the Long Island Childrens’ Museum late August, come check the show out! Otherwise, stay tuned; this won’t be the last you’ll see of the Piper.

Back in late 2020, Gil Varod, AJ Freeman, and I wrote a 20 minute musical called “The Carousel of Inevitability and Certain Foreboding” for the New York Public Library’s Across a Crowded Room program. You can find the link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQZSOWO-bu8

Well, we’re expanding the idea to a full length show and there are plans afoot to do a presentation in the Fall. So watch this space for more info on how to see this bizarre, surreal take on a classic theme park ride.

Speaking of Across a Crowded Room, I’m participating again this year! So you know what that means; another set of bonkers short musicals coming your way. Performances this year will be November 19th at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at the Lincoln Center and, assuming I finish my show on time, you should see a short musical I’m working on with Timothy Johnson and Joan Saltzman. Wish us luck!

My one-woman song cycle, “The Baroque Cycle”, is getting full performances in November through New York Theatre Festival’s Winterfest at Theater Latea in Manhattan! I’ll be posting A LOT more about this when we get closer, but for now, you can check out this video of a reading of the show from 2019. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuHtYZFp0Rk

And that should finish out the year! Of course, other things will be coming up too. I expect Miss Humanity will have another public performance or two. My musical, That Punk, Robin Hood! should be finished in the fall, so look out at the beginning of 2023 for more info. And who knows what else!

2020 Update

Wow. Strange times we’ve found ourselves in, huh.

Most of my career is in theatre. Which is pretty much shut down right now. But I’m still teaching online voice lessons, still playing for classes at AMDA, and, incredibly, working on a couple fantastic new projects coming up. Here’s a quick run-down.

Bite-Sized Broadway— A mini-musical podcast. consists of 50-minute episodes each featuring a 10-to-20-minute “mini-musical” presented as a fully produced radio play complete with top-of-the-line digital orchestrations and captivating sound effects. Each musical is followed by a discussion with its writers about their piece and their careers. In order to support these gifted writers, we have cast top Broadway and theatre industry talent to help get eyes and ears on these writers and help them launch a fruitful career in the theatre. We hope this program will also encourage other more well-known writers to keep creating short-form musical masterpieces, exercising their creativity and inspiring new and young writers to do the same! “Medea in #quarantine” — Where O where, has Medea gone? Turns out, she’s in quarantine like the rest of us, er, uh, make that house arrest, in an undisclosed location. As Civilization plummets into one pandemic-induced disaster after another, Medea decides it’s the right moment to reach out across the airwaves and tell anyone who will listen about the disastrous events of her life--from her side of the story--and sing about them too. In seven episodic “confessions”, Medea sings the classic standards of her day and recounts the story of her life--all the while maintaining her innocence about the act that has made her the most detested woman of the Western world. Is her world our world, or is our world all hers? Tune in to find out! An independent production by the Brasstacks Theater Collective, Medea in #quarantine will be streaming across multiple platforms in the near future. Starring Laura Cetti as Medea and directed by Jesse Manocherian. Creative team: book: Nancy Irene Kelly; composer: Jonathon Lynch; lyricist: Kevin Wanzor; assistant director and production manager: Christian Henry.

The Giant Hoax

A new musical I’ve arranged and music directed is going into previews this week! The show is called “The Giant Hoax.” Written by Kit Goldstein-Grant, directed by Christopher Michaels. It’s a fantastic new show I’m thrilled to be a part of.

Check it out here. I’d love to see you at the show!

Flow Chart

People ask me all the time*, ‘Hey, Jonathon, you’re awesome! But you do so much stuff! I don’t know the best way to support you!’

Fear not! I made a handy flow chart. Follow it to the end and let me know what you got!

*literally no one has ever said this to me.

Coming soon...

Happy New Year! Here are a few thing to watch out for in 2019.

  • ELIMINATION — The video game I did the soundtrack for is going to be released soon! Keep watching this space to find out how you can play this cool word game.

  • BAROQUE CYCLE — My contemporary, 1600’s musical theatre song cycle is going to be completed in the next couple months. Expect presentations and performances late in 2019.

  • A New Full Length Show — That’s right! I haven’t written a note of it yet, but in March I’ll be making an entire musical, start to finish, with collaborator Gil Varod. Expect to see clips of the songs throughout the process and a reading in early April.
